UPDATE: Recent Pleasures
Mar. 16th, 2005 05:30 pmWatching Stone Reader with my sorely neglected writers' group in
feralboy2's beautiful apartment. Saw
layer,
whirlybirdgirl,
recursive,
idunno3, and the LJ-less Mike B. (Did I miss anyone?) Dammit, I miss you folks. It's been months since I went to a writers' meeting. I also got to meet
feralboy2's lithe and dangerous cats.
Afterward we went to the Writers with Drinks reading, where I finally got to meet
charliegrrrl and
susanstinson, two fine writers. I saw a few other friends there and met
gordonzola, too.
When the reading was done,
feralboy2 and
idunno3 very kindly walked me to BART. Insisted on doing so, though I laughingly protested that nobody was likely to mess with me. Cliff said, "Don't laugh like that" just as we passed another woman flanked by two guys, one of whom said, "Laugh like that."
The whole day was great--a ride with Michele, a relaxed trip on BART and an SF city bus, time to read and think, followed by spending hours with some of my very favorite people.
Another recent pleasure was walking in Berkeley on a bright, breezy spring day. Not "taking a walk," but walking because it was the most convenient way to do the errand. I love urban walking: looking at the details on the houses and fences, reading the posters plastered on store windows, overhearing conversations of strangers, saying hello to the elderly woman sitting on her stoop enjoying the sunshine. I love rural walks, too. The suburbs make me itchy: sidewalks eerily empty, houses all alike, miles of identical streets leading only to each other. Like a walk in the Twilight Zone.
The day after the writers' group met, I was fairly wiped out -- my weekend was overbooked -- so I napped all afternoon and stayed in that evening. I was very sorry to miss
bearsir's performance, plus all my friends who went.
And another recent pleasure is spending a whole day at home. Even with letting the cats in and out twenty times, it's lovely to be home, among my own books and music. I miss spending time with my family, too -- I've seen a fair bit of
gramina and
14cyclenotes lately, on the long commute to various East Bay destinations, but I haven't spent much time with my
housepet. I think we need a movie afternoon together.
