Perfect

The weekend with Michele was, well, perfect. We shopped for groceries for our little hotel suite, walked around Castro St. in Mountain View, and ransacked used bookstores. We cooked, talked, slept, played, made love, and it was all so nourishing -- just being together with no other responsibilities or calls on our time.

Sunday we detoured through the mountain up to La Honda, stopping at the Heritage Grove, where we climbed the hill to a virgin stand of mixed redwoods and Douglas fir, noticing all the little lichens and mushrooms, the light filtering through high branches, the grand trees soft with moss. Then through Saratoga toward home.

At home I took a nap, then made a lovely cream soup from various vegetables. I sautéed leeks and onions, added the one remaining portabella mushroom, then chopped and added a couple of carrots and a fair number of potatoes, cooked them all in chicken broth. Whirled it in the blender, added some milk, and it was a beautiful soup, with a creamy texture and a lot of complex flavor. A mushroom soup but with more depth, less woodsiness. I love cooking, and I rarely get to, because I arrive home around 8PM too weary to do anything but grab a bite and retire to bed.

Heaven. Now Michele is away for the whole week, because she has to train the new central admin on the system. I won’t see her until Friday. I’m feeling some let-down, not just from the joy of being so intensely close, but because she isn’t going to be here.

Loving Michele may be the wisest thing I’ve ever done, and the most rewarding.
