Update and Technical Network Question

Doing enormously better -- thanks to everyone for their kindness. (Everyone includes Gabriel, not usually much of a lap cat, who insisted that I spend several days petting and snuggling with her. Best therapy ever.) I've been writing again and that helps too.

Now for the network question. We have a mixed Mac and PC household on our wifi network. I want to add network attached storage (NAS) for backups and filesharing (music, ebooks).

I'm reading up on this, and I am wondering: can I convert an existing external hard drive to a NAS box? How do I do that? Do I need a USB to Ethernet converter? What else do I need?

Any advice, links, resources, etc., will be gratefully accepted.

Yay Gabriel!! I was feeling cautious asking about her because I didn't remember if she had returned from her last expedition. My feral friend Brigit makes me think of her. We lost her sister Ostra and I miss her something fierce, as I think Brigit does from her increased bonding with me.
