It's Open Season on Political Toes

As you know, Bob, Rep. Joe Wilson (Rep, SC) yelled, "You lie!" at President Obama during his health-care speech. The reaction shot of Obama, Biden, and Pelosi was so amazing I had to macro it.

Twice, actually. )

The other reactions have been amazing, too. Rob Miller, the Democrat challenging Wilson in the 2010 election, has been getting plenty of donations (more than $40,000 worth so far) from groups with such slogans as 'Defeating the man who yelled "liar" at Obama: Goodbye Rep Joe Wilson', "No More Name Calling," and "Iowans Against Idiocy."

Click or refresh for a new Joe Wilson insult. Collect them all!

More than a hundred years ago--in 1902, to be specific--the junior senator from South Carolina gave the lie direct to the senior senator from that state. Right on the Senate floor, no less. The results were a fistfight and the stern rule prohibiting such conduct:
"No senator in debate shall, directly or indirectly, by any form of words impute to another Senator or to other Senators any conduct or motive unworthy or unbecoming a Senator."

I don't know if the House of Representatives has such a rule, or whether it extends to the president. I do know that Wilson has not done his own cause much good.

But Wilson is not alone in his podiatric target practice.

All I have to say is "Republican family values candidate," right? You know this is going to be a sex scandal.

Except this particular incident is even more egregious than the usual dreary, sordid affair. Michael Duvall, California state assemblyman from ultraconservative Orange County, had to resign after his sexual shenanigans became public.

I wouldn't bother pointing any fingers at Duvall just for heterosexual activity with women over the age of consent--even though both women were married, as is Duvall. But several other factors make the incident particularly nasty:

Now that's shooting yourself in the foot.

IBARW: Lou Dobbs and CNN

So, have you seen CNN lately? And Lou Dobbs spewing poisonous insinuations about whether President Obama has any right to serve?

The story of Obama's birth in Hawaii has been thoroughly investigated and found to be true. He is eligible to be president, and he won the office fair and square. At this point, the birther story is not news. It's propaganda designed to intensify white Americans' uneasiness about race and immigration issues.

So what is it doing on a legitimate news channel? It doesn't belong there. Colorofchange.com has put together a petition to CNN to get Lou Dobbs off the air.

The petition and some links )

The birther campaign is hatemongering in Constitutionalist clothing. It is also bizarrely stupid, since Obama was, in fact, born a citizen of the USA by virtue of his mother's citizenship. Dobbs cannot be dumb enough to actually believe the paranoid theories he is peddling. Either he is discarding journalistic ethics and standards for the sake of ratings, or he is deliberately fomenting hatred for political reasons--or both.

Either motivation would be more at home in the corrupt sensationalism of Fox News. CNN should be better than that.

Ju$t a $imple Pre$ident

From a PBS interview:

GHARIB: Well, you’ve pressed OPEC to increase oil production –

BUSH: I did.

GHARIB: And they didn’t do it. Let’s say that OPEC did pump more oil. How much do you think that that would bring down oil prices, by $20, $30?

BUSH: You know, I don’t know. You’re going to have to ask the experts that. I’m just a simple president. But I really don’t know what it would do. I do know that the main problem is supply and demand and excess supply obviously would help.

Watch the video. And weep for your country. ETA Weep for your country even if you're not a citizen of the US. Because the devastation has not, unfortunately, been confined to the fifty states. Dubya has ten more months in office. Who knows -- maybe he'll decide to invade you next.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] jonquil for the link.
